Ben Monder is one of those guitarists other guitarists talk about in hushed tones. Based in New York, he has spent decades carving out a sound that sits somewhere between jazz, avant garde experimentation, and pure atmosphere, working with an extraordinary range of collaborators from Maria Schneider and Paul Motian to Lee Konitz and Theo Bleckmann. His debut, Flux, landed in 1995, and he has been quietly building one of the more distinctive discographies in modern jazz ever since. The solo record Oceana from 2005 is often cited as a landmark, and his ECM debut Amorphae in 2016 brought him wider attention. That same year he played guitar on David Bowie's final studio album Blackstar, a credit that introduced him to a whole new audience. Since 2021 he has been part of the Minneapolis based jazz quartet The Bad Plus, and his output has kept coming, with Planetarium released on Sunnyside in 2024.
