Better Lovers rose from the wreckage of Every Time I Die, the Buffalo metalcore institution that split after 24 years following an ugly internal fallout. Guitarists Jordan Buckley and Will Putney, bassist Stephen Micciche, and drummer Clayton Holyoak regrouped with a clear creative drive, bringing in Greg Puciato of The Dillinger Escape Plan on vocals to complete what many call a supergroup, though the band pushes back on that label. Putney, who had produced Every Time I Die's final two records, stepped out from behind the console and into the lineup as a full member. They hit the ground running with their debut EP God Made Me an Animal in mid 2023, then spent the next year building toward their first full length record. Highly Irresponsible arrived in October 2024 on SharpTone Records, a sixteen track statement the band described as "insanity and restraint, beauty and chaos." A deluxe edition followed in late 2025 with two additional songs. The record earned support slots and headline runs on both sides of the Atlantic, cementing Better Lovers as a serious going concern rather than a nostalgia project.
