About
Big Band Heerlen has come a long way since its days as a music school ensemble, growing under the direction of Harrie Lambrichts and Joris Minten into a semi professional orchestra with a strong reputation across the region. Over the course of more than 200 concerts, the band has performed not only throughout the Netherlands but also in Germany, France and Spain. Rooted in Heerlen, they have a long track record of showing up for local cultural events and festivals. Their repertoire sits firmly in the big band and swing tradition, though they are not shy about ambitious creative projects. A notable example is their staging of the Hollandse Meesters programme, which reimagines Dutch pop classics in jazzy big band arrangements. These arrangements were originally created by Willem Friede of New Cool Collective for a 2014 album recorded at the Rijksmuseum, and Big Band Heerlen became the first big band in the Netherlands to perform them live. On 4 December 2026 the band marks its 40th anniversary with a premiere concert of that very programme.
