About
Big Miller was a blues shouter in the truest sense: he could belt it out over a full big band without a microphone, which is a genuinely rare skill. Born in Sioux City, he built his early career singing in Kansas City and recording for Savoy Records, sharing sessions with musicians who would go on to form The Five Pennies. He went on to work alongside Count Basie and Duke Ellington, two names that say everything about the company he kept. His big break into wider visibility came through John Hendricks' revue The Evolution of the Blues, which opened doors at Columbia Records and led to a run of albums in the early 1960s. He also carved out a side career as an actor, turning up in films like It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and Big Meat Eater. A documentary followed in 1987, a fitting nod to a career that kept blues shouting alive long after most had moved on.
