Bill Orcutt plays a four string electric guitar in ways most people wouldn't think to try, mixing blues grit, free jazz sprawl, and noise into something distinctly his own. He first made a serious mark in the 1990s with Harry Pussy, a confrontational duo he formed with drummer and vocalist Adris Hoyos. Drawing from no wave, hardcore punk and free jazz, the band was a key influence on the noise movement and toured the US regularly, often alongside Sonic Youth and Sebadoh. After a long break from music, Orcutt returned in 2009 with the solo guitar record A New Way to Pay Old Debts, which landed third on The Wire's year end list. He has kept a prolific pace since, releasing records on his own Palilalia and Fake Estates labels, the latter focused on music made with Cracked, an open source live coding environment for sound that he built himself. He also plays frequently with drummer Chris Corsano and has collaborated with Peter Brötzmann, Loren Mazzacane Connors and others.
