Bill Ryder Jones spent years as lead guitarist with The Coral before stepping away in 2008 to carve out one of the more quietly distinctive solo careers in British indie folk. His debut album, If..., set the tone for how ambitious he could be: a fully orchestrated instrumental record made with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, conceived as an imaginary film score for Italo Calvino's novel If on a Winter's Night a Traveler. From there he shifted gears completely, moving into sparse, confessional folk on A Bad Wind Blows in My Heart and a heavier, band feel sound on West Kirby County Primary, which drew comparisons to Super Furry Animals and Pavement. His 2018 album Yawn and its acoustic counterpart Yawny Yawn both landed well with critics, showing he keeps finding new angles on the same emotionally direct songwriting. He also produces for other artists and writes film scores, making him one of the more versatile figures in his corner of British music.
