Billy Currie is the keyboard and violin player whose contributions helped shape the sound of Ultravox, the new wave band that dominated the early 1980s British charts with hits like "Vienna". A classically trained viola and violin player from Huddersfield, Currie brings an unusually orchestral sensibility to pop and electronic music, layering soaring ARP Odyssey synth lines alongside real strings in a way that few of his contemporaries could match. His fingerprints are on more than just Ultravox. He co wrote "Fade to Grey", the massive Visage hit, out of a jam session riff that started life as "Toot City" during a Gary Numan tour soundcheck. He also contributed to Numan's landmark album The Pleasure Principle and worked with guitarist Steve Howe across multiple projects. Since 2001 Currie has been steadily releasing solo records on his own label, and in 2016 he put out his tenth solo album Doppel before announcing his retirement from Ultravox.
