Billy Nomates is the stage name of Tor Maries, an English singer songwriter whose sound sits somewhere between post punk and no wave, with a delivery critics have called sprechgesang, deadpan yet biting. Her self titled debut, recorded in Bristol with Portishead's Geoff Barrow, landed in 2020 and was picked as Album of the Year by BBC Radio 6 Music's Amy Lamé. The Guardian singled her out as one to watch, noting her sharp lens on British class structure. She followed the debut with the Emergency Telephone EP in 2021, produced on Barrow's Invada label, and appeared on Sleaford Mods track "Mork n Mindy" the same year. Her second album Cacti arrived in 2023. Third album Metalhorse, released in 2025, marked a shift: for the first time she brought in other musicians, bassist Mandy Clarke and drummer Liam Chapman, rather than handling every musical part herself.
