Few groups have stayed as stubbornly uncommercial as BIOTA, the experimental electronic ensemble out of Fort Collins, Colorado, whose roots stretch back to the late 1970s under the name Mnemonist Orchestra. Their early album Horde, released in 1981, turned heads for its use of musique concrète techniques and unconventional sound manipulation, earning enough attention that Recommended Records picked it up for reissue. After splitting from their visual arts counterpart in the mid 1980s, Biota settled into a prolific run of records on the RēR label, each one built from an unlikely mix of folk, jazz, free improvisation, processed acoustics, and careful studio alchemy. Over four decades the collective has kept expanding its circle, bringing in collaborators like drummer Chris Cutler, vocalist Susanne Lewis, and folk singer Kristianne Gale, whose voice became central to the sound from Half a True Day onward. Their 2019 release Fragment for Balance marked 40 years of existence, and in 2025 they returned with Measured Not Found, their first full length in six years.
