About

Also known as: BCMG

BCMG has premiered over 150 new works since a group of City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra players started it up in 1987, with Simon Rattle as founding patron. That's a serious pile of fresh music for one chamber ensemble. They've commissioned the likes of Thomas Adès, Judith Weir, Gerald Barry, Colin Matthews and Helen Grime, and Adès even served as their first music director from 1998 to 2000. The Birmingham group plays regularly at the CBSO Centre and Symphony Hall, tours at home and abroad, and has turned up at the Proms more than once. The trophy shelf is healthy too: a Gramophone Award for Best Orchestral Recording in 1995 and Royal Philharmonic Society honours among them. One neat quirk is their Sound Investment scheme, where members of the public chip in to help fund a new commission and get to sit in on rehearsals and the first performance in return. Stephan Meier is the current artistic director.
