Black Crown Initiate built their reputation fast. The Reading, Pennsylvania death and progressive metal outfit went from self releasing a four track EP in 2013 to landing a spot on the Metal Alliance Tour alongside Behemoth and Goatwhore before they even had a full length record out. That debut EP, Song of the Crippled Bull, spread quickly through underground metal circles and set the tone for a band willing to push the boundaries of technical death metal with more melodic, progressive weight. Their 2016 album Selves We Cannot Forgive remains their best selling release and drew solid critical praise. The band kept evolving through lineup shifts, including bringing in former The Faceless guitarist Wes Hauch, and eventually releasing their third album Violent Portraits of Doomed Escape through Century Media in 2020. The name, by the way, comes from a Tibetan spiritual leader who wears a black crown as a symbol of service to humanity. The band's take on it is considerably more self deprecating.
