About
Black Fallow Deer is a duo from the harbor city of Rotterdam: Mannie Boor, who handles voice and storytelling, and Joeri Rook, a multi instrumentalist. They have been friends for a long time, and their songs come straight out of real life. They grew up on the Dutch levenslied tradition, those songs soaked in melancholy, and describe themselves as the sons of Nostalgique Noir. The sound is all smoky, dimly lit music halls and red velvet curtains, with laid back crooning over delay drenched Gretsch guitars. They name Andre Hazes, Ramses Shaffy and Jacques Brel as forebears, and see Tindersticks and Richard Hawley as kindred spirits. The aim is to carry their own past into the present through romantic balladry. Their first single, It's Raining in Rotterdam, does exactly that.
