About
Black Pencil is a five piece ensemble rooted in Almere and Flevoland, with a playing field that spans more than a thousand years of music history. Their instrumentation is genuinely unusual: a large collection of recorders and pan flutes alongside viola, accordion and percussion. Since forming in 2010, the group has had around 500 new pieces written specifically for them, drawing on composers from across the globe, including celebrated figures such as Camiel Jansen and Roderik de Man. The ensemble sits comfortably between classical concert halls and more adventurous contexts, mixing contemporary classical music with folk, film, theatre, spoken word and even DJ sets. They perform regularly in the Netherlands and have toured Germany, Austria, Spain, Ireland, Turkey, Denmark, Indonesia and Venezuela. Recent work connects them to virtual reality, dance and land art, and they run their own concert series in both Amsterdam and Almere. Several albums are already to their name.
