About
Black Sun Empire built their reputation as one of the most respected names in neurofunk, earning the tag 'the kings of all things neuro' from critics over a career that stretches back to Utrecht in the late 1990s. The trio of Rene Verdult and brothers Micha and Milan Heyboer cite Ed Rush and Optical, Bad Company, and Stakka and Skynet as major influences, and that lineage is pretty audible in their dense, mechanical sound. Their 2012 album From the Shadows was a commercial breakthrough, landing in Beatport's Top 5 Best Selling Albums that year and sending them on a world tour across Europe, the US, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. Beyond releasing six studio albums on their own Black Sun Empire Recordings imprint, they founded two more labels, Obsessions and Blackout Music NL, and launched the Blackout festival series, which eventually expanded from the Netherlands to London and Los Angeles. They have collaborated with a wide range of artists across splits and EPs, including Noisia and State of Mind, and have a split release with Corrupted Souls on the Obsessions label.
