About
Joey Ramone called their sound "fireball punk rock," and the last project he worked on before his death was a Blackfire record. The band was three siblings from Flagstaff, Arizona: Jeneda, Klee and Clayson Benally. They mixed punk and alternative rock with traditional Diné music, and their songs took on government oppression and human rights. Their father, a traditional Navajo medicine man, sang on their debut LP, One Nation Under, which came out in 2001. It won the NAMA Best Pop/Rock Album award, and Joey Ramone added voice to a couple of tracks. Their first EP in 1994 was produced by C.J. Ramone. They later put out Woody Guthrie Singles, two protest songs about war and corruption, and played in Mali, a trip captured on the Festival in the Desert compilation. Their song "No Control" even turned up in an episode of What's New, Scooby Doo? Blackfire ran from 1989 to 2011, and members went on to form Sihasin. Klee Benally died in December 2023.
