About
Bleak Squad are a Melbourne supergroup whose combined résumé reads like a who's who of Australian alternative music. The four members, Adalita Srsen of Magic Dirt, Mick Harvey of The Birthday Party and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Mick Turner of Dirty Three, and Marty Brown of Art of Fighting, spent several years casually jamming and trading riffs before they realised they actually had an album on their hands. Adalita came up with the name herself, saying it captures both the loose, misfit nature of the group and the noir ish mood running through their music. Their debut record Strange Love, put out via Poison City Records, was recorded with a deliberately spontaneous approach: learn a song once, run through it, then capture the second take. The result is something that sits in noir rock and art rock territory, with Adalita and Harvey trading lead vocals across the album. The Guardian called it "a genuine collaboration" that sounds more like a fourth album than a first, and Backseat Mafia gave it a 9.2 out of 10.
