About
Also known as: Blutengle
Blutengel is the Berlin outfit built around Chris Pohl, who started the project in 1998 after shutting down his earlier band Seelenkrank. Their sound mixes melodic electronics with male and female vocals, sung in German and English, and they like to call it dark pop. The songs circle gothic favourites: love, vampirism, fetish, death and immortality. Things really picked up in the 2000s. Angel Dust landed at 58 in the German charts in 2002, Labyrinth reached 36 in 2007, and by 2011 Tränenherz sat at number 12. Monument went all the way to number 4 in 2013. Their first ever gig drew 10,000 people at the Wave Gotik Treffen in Leipzig, and they toured North America for the first time in 2012. There was also an orchestral album, Black Symphonies, in 2014. The female singers have rotated over the years, with Ulrike Goldmann a long running presence alongside Pohl.
