Few electronic acts have conjured a feeling quite like Boards of Canada. The Scottish duo of brothers Mike Sandison and Marcus Eoin built their sound around vintage synths, analog gear, and hip hop influenced beats, wrapping it all in a haze of nostalgia, half remembered childhood imagery, and the occasional unsettling undercurrent. Their 1998 debut Music Has the Right to Children, released on Warp Records, is now a landmark in electronic music, and the darker follow up Geogaddi brought in references to religious cults and esoteric themes. The Campfire Headphase leaned into more organic textures, while Tomorrow's Harvest drew heavily from cinematic film scores. Notoriously reclusive, the duo have embedded subliminal messages in their work and have not performed live since 2001, letting the music do all the talking.
