Bobby McFerrin is probably best known for "Don't Worry, Be Happy," the only a cappella track ever to hit number one in the US, though he's always been far more than a one hit wonder. His vocal technique is genuinely extraordinary: he can sustain a melody while flipping between arpeggios and harmonies at speed, layer in polyphonic overtone singing, and turn his voice into a percussion instrument, all without a backing band in sight. He spent six years developing that approach before releasing his debut album in 1982, deliberately avoiding listening to other singers so he could arrive at something entirely his own. McFerrin has collaborated with jazz heavyweights like Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and cellist Yo Yo Ma, scored the Pixar short Knick Knack, and assembled a ten person vocal group called Voicestra for his 1990 album Medicine Music. Since 1994 he has served as creative chair of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and tours regularly as a guest conductor with major orchestras, often closing shows by having the orchestra sing the William Tell Overture in his own vocal style.
