About

Also known as: Emmett Ellis, Jr.

Bobby Rush has been bending the rules of blues for decades, mixing in funk, rap, and a sharp comic wit that sets him apart from just about anyone else in the genre. Born Emmett Ellis Jr. in Homer, Louisiana, he built his reputation the hard way, playing juke joints and club circuits alongside legends like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and Etta James before his 1971 track "Chicken Heads" went gold and put his name on the map. That song later got a second life when it appeared in the film Black Snake Moan. Rush kept recording and touring relentlessly, racking up twelve Blues Music Awards and eventually winning a Grammy in 2017 for Porcupine Meat at age 83. He was the first blues artist to perform in China, earning the title "International Dean of the Blues", and he has since been inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame. Most recently he contributed harmonica work to the 2025 film Sinners.
