Bobo Stenson has spent decades at the quieter, more contemplative end of jazz, building a reputation as one of Sweden's finest pianists through a long run of recordings on ECM Records. Based in Västerås originally, he made his name in Stockholm in the early 1960s accompanying visiting American giants like Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz and Gary Burton, and worked closely with Don Cherry through the trumpeter's years in Scandinavia. Those early associations already showed the range he would sustain throughout his career. The Bobo Stenson Trio, with bassist Anders Jormin and drummer Jon Fält, has been the heart of his output for over five decades, producing a string of ECM albums from Reflections through to Sphere in 2023. Outside the trio he has been a key collaborator for Charles Lloyd, Tomasz Stańko and Jan Garbarek, among others, lending his measured and lyrical touch to some of the most significant recordings in European jazz.
