About
Bomba Estéreo took what Colombian cumbia traditions were doing and plugged them into a wall of electronic beats, coming up with something their fans call electro tropical or psychedelic cumbia. Founded in Bogotá in 2005 by Simón Mejía, the band really clicked when vocalist and rapper Liliana "Li" Saumet joined up, bringing a sharp, charismatic presence to tracks like "Fuego" that helped earn them MTV Iggy's "Best New Band in the World" for 2010. That song turned up everywhere, from the Showtime series Dexter to the FIFA 10 soundtrack, and even resurfaced in Far Cry 6 over a decade later. Their fourth album Amanecer, released on Sony Music in 2015, pushed them to a wider audience still. The music video for "Soy Yo" became a cultural moment in its own right, racking up millions of views and landing on the soundtracks of Pitch Perfect 3 and Dora and the Lost City of Gold. More recently, the band linked up with Manu Chao for the track "Me Duele", showing they're still finding interesting collaborators to work with.
