About
Simon Green, the Brighton born producer and DJ who records as Bonobo, has spent over two decades building a sound that sits somewhere between downtempo electronica, jazz, and world music. What makes his approach distinctive is how he layers organic instrumentation into electronic production, then takes it further by performing the whole thing live with a full band. His early records on Tru Thoughts, including the 2000 debut Animal Magic, earned him a cult following even when critics shrugged. The real breakthrough came with Black Sands in 2010, which moved away from sample heavy beats toward richer, more textured live playing. The 2017 album Migration was his biggest commercial moment, peaking at number 5 in the UK and earning Grammy nominations for both Best Dance/Electronic Album and Best Dance Recording, with the track Bambro Koyo Ganda feat. Innov Gnawa drawing particular attention. It also won Album of the Year at the Electronic Music Awards. His seventh album, Fragments, followed in January 2022 with a run of collaborations featuring Jamila Woods, Jordan Rakei, and Joji among others.
