Bosse-de-Nage

About

Bosse de Nage named themselves after a monkey in a French symbolist novel that may or may not have been a hallucination, which tells you a lot about the kind of band they are. The San Francisco four piece operates anonymously, going by single initials, and makes black metal that pulls hard from shoegaze, post rock, screamo and post hardcore. Critics have noted how their sound can stretch outward into vast, atmospheric space one moment and then collapse into claustrophobic walls of needling guitars and frantic drumming the next. Slint, Mogwai and Godspeed You! Black Emperor are among their acknowledged touchstones. Their lyrics circle around bodies, filth, sex, perversion and death, matching the unsettling mood of the music. They built their catalog across labels, debuting on The Flenser in 2010 before Profound Lore picked up III in 2012. A split with fellow San Francisco act Deafheaven that same year raised their profile further. After Further Still in 2018 they have kept things quiet, though a sixth album, Hidden Fires Burn Hottest, is on the way.
