Few American orchestras carry the weight of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Founded in 1881 by Henry Lee Higginson, the BSO plays in Symphony Hall, a venue so acoustically precise it ranks among the best concert halls in the world. The orchestra earned its place among America's so called Big Five largely under the baton of Serge Koussevitzky, whose tenure from 1924 to 1949 transformed it into a powerhouse of the classical world. Koussevitzky also commissioned major works from composers including Stravinsky, Ravel, Bartók, and Prokofiev, cementing the BSO's reputation as a force in shaping twentieth century repertoire. The BSO has a knack for leaving a lasting imprint beyond Boston. It founded the Tanglewood Music Centre, a summer hub that has shaped generations of musicians. Its resident chorus, the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, has been part of the orchestra's identity since 1970. The BSO also gave rise to the Boston Pops, a separate ensemble that introduced lighter classical fare to broad audiences under Arthur Fiedler and later film composer John Williams.
