About

Also known as: Boubacar Traore, Boubacar Traoré (Mali), Boubacar Traoure, Kar Kar

Known in Mali as 'Kar Kar', a nickname he picked up as a teenage soccer star, Boubacar Traoré had already become a genuine superstar in his home country before most of the world had ever heard of him. His songs dominated Malian radio in the early 1960s, yet he never made a single recording and earned no royalties, leaving him broke despite the fame. A military coup in 1968 effectively erased him from public life, and he spent years doing farm work and running a shop before a surprise TV appearance in 1987 brought him back into view. The real international breakthrough came after a British producer stumbled onto a leaked tape of one of his old radio performances, leading to his debut album Mariama in 1990. His sound sits at a crossroads of West African Mande pentatonic structures, Arab music, and American blues, though Traoré himself pushes back on the blues label, insisting his roots are firmly in Malian rhythms. Bill Frisell has called him the 'Elvis of Mali', and his catalog now stretches from Sa Golo to Mbalimaou and beyond, with a live album dropping as recently as 2024.
