About
Also known as: The Brad Mehldau Trio
Brad Mehldau has been leading his trio since the early 1990s, and it remains one of the most consistently compelling units in jazz. The group's original lineup paired Mehldau with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy, and together they built a reputation across a string of albums starting with Introducing Brad Mehldau and continuing through the celebrated Art of the Trio series. In 2005, Jeff Ballard stepped in for Rossy, refreshing the chemistry without losing the thread. What sets the trio apart is how Mehldau folds in pop, rock, and classical influences, especially German Romanticism, while keeping things rooted in jazz. His habit of playing different melodies simultaneously in each hand gives the music a layered quality that has genuinely shifted how other musicians think about repertoire and arrangement. Critics were calling him one of jazz's leading voices by the mid to late 1990s, and the trio's output since then has only reinforced that standing.
