About

Few classical soloists make the bassoon feel genuinely exciting, but Bram van Sambeek has spent years doing exactly that. The Dutch player left his post as principal bassoonist of the Rotterdam Philharmonic in 2011 to concentrate on solo work and chamber music, and has since appeared as guest principal with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. He records for BIS Records, with highlights including the Fagerlund and Aho bassoon concertos and a well received Bach album. His Heckel bassoon, built in 1970, was previously played by two of the instrument's legends, Klaus Thunemann and Sergio Azzolini. Van Sambeek also runs a project called Vivaldi Rocks, where his ensemble ORBI mixes Vivaldi concerti with rock songs to pull new audiences toward early music. He was even tapped as spokesperson for the Holland Festival's Save the Bassoon campaign, which drew attention to the shortage of bassoonists and other less glamorous orchestral instruments. On top of performing, he teaches at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, and in 2009 he became the only bassoonist ever to receive the Dutch Music Award.
