Brian Bromberg built his reputation fast. At 19, with barely six years on the bass, he was already touring internationally with Stan Getz after getting a recommendation from Bill Evans's bassist Marc Johnson. That kind of early credibility set the tone for a career that would rack up eight top ten hits, seven top five hits, and two number one records across smooth jazz and beyond. His 1998 album You Know That Feeling was the breakthrough, spending seventeen consecutive months on the charts and becoming the first smooth jazz number one of his career. From there he kept pushing into new territory, recording tributes to Jaco Pastorius, exploring acoustic jazz with Freddie Hubbard and Ernie Watts, and forming the JB Project with drummer Akira Jimbo. One of his signature moves is using a piccolo bass tuned an octave higher than normal to handle what most artists would give to a six string guitar, a choice that gives his recordings a genuinely distinctive sound.
