Brooklyn Funk Essentials are one of those New York acts that never fit neatly into a single box. Formed in 1993 by Arthur Baker and Lati Kronlund, the band built their name by blending funk, hip hop, jazz, reggae, and poetry into something the acid jazz world happily claimed as its own. Their debut album Cool and Steady and Easy landed in 1994, and within a year they were opening for Ben Harper and Michael Franti and Spearhead. The group went on to share stages with James Brown, Parliament Funkadelic, and Erykah Badu before going on hiatus in 2001. They have proved remarkably hard to keep down. After reforming twice and adding new voices along the way, including Alison Limerick and Desmond Foster, Brooklyn Funk Essentials released their sixth album Stay Good in 2019 and their seventh, Intuition, in 2023. Seven albums deep and still rolling, they headlined Jazz à Vienne in 2021 and have kept releasing new singles well into the mid 2020s.
