Few R&B groups of the 1990s made an entrance quite like Brownstone. The Los Angeles trio landed on Michael Jackson's MJJ Music label and scored a massive hit straight out of the gate with "If You Love Me", a song so smooth it earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance. Their debut album From the Bottom Up also gave the world "Grapevyne", while the follow up record Still Climbing produced "5 Miles to Empty". Their take on the Eagles classic "I Can't Tell You Why" showed the group had serious vocal range beyond their own material. Brownstone went through plenty of lineup changes over the years, and the death of founding member Maxee Maxwell in 2015 was a real blow. Still, founding member Nicci Gilbert has kept the group going, and a 25th anniversary reunion at the Essence Music Festival in 2019 brought some of the original magic back. The current lineup released the single "All I Want" in 2022 and has also put out a live cover of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" as a taste of an upcoming live covers album.
