Bruno Weil has spent decades building a reputation as one of the most versatile conductors working across both modern and period instrument ensembles. The German conductor, born in Hahnstätten, stepped into the spotlight dramatically in 1988 when he replaced Herbert von Karajan at short notice at the Salzburg Festival, taking the podium for three performances of Mozart's Don Giovanni. That ability to hold his own in high pressure situations says a lot about where he sits in the conducting world. His long partnership with Toronto's period instrument group Tafelmusik has produced some genuinely celebrated recordings. Their Haydn 'Paris' Symphonies took the MIDEM Cannes Classical award in 1996, and the same year Tafelmusik was named Orchestra of the Year at the Echo Klassik Awards for their recording of Haydn's Heiligmesse. Weil himself picked up the Echo Klassik Conductor of the Year prize in 1997, and his recording of Johann Christian Bach's opera Endimione won the award for best opera recording of the 17th and 18th century in 2000. He has since served as Music Director of the Carmel Bach Festival and teaches conducting at the State Academy for Music and Theater in Munich.
