About
Caleb Burhans calls his own style "emo classical," a devotional, poignant approach that pulls equally from sacred and secular sources. He's a composer, singer and multi instrumentalist who has been commissioned by Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Library of Congress and the Kronos Quartet, and he's a founding member of Alarm Will Sound, Ensemble Signal and the Wordless Music Orchestra. His collaborator list swings from Steve Reich and George Crumb to Max Richter, Arcade Fire and Paul McCartney. His debut album Evensong came out on Cantaloupe Music in 2013 and landed on NPR Classical's favorites of the year. It's bookended by choral settings and nods to his church music roots. Past Lives followed in 2019, a four track record reflecting on years lost to addiction and fallen friends. Its opener, A Moment for Jason Molina, made NPR's best songs of 2019, right alongside Billie Eilish and Lizzo. He's also half of the ambient rock duo itsnotyouitsme.
