About

Since 2018, Calliope Tsoupaki has held the title of composer laureate of the Netherlands, a fitting recognition for a Greek composer whose work draws equally on Byzantine tradition and contemporary Western classical music. Born in Piraeus and trained in Athens, she later studied with Louis Andriessen at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague before settling in Amsterdam, where she built a career spanning solo, orchestral, chamber, opera and oratorio. Her best known work, St. Luke's Passion, brings together the contrastingly different worlds of West European contemporary classical music and Byzantine tradition. She has a particular fondness for unusual instruments, reaching for the qanun, ney, kemençe, hurdy gurdy and viola da gamba as naturally as any standard ensemble forces. Her works have been performed across Europe and the United States, and she has taught composition at the Koninklijk Conservatorium since 2007.
