Calva Louise run on a pretty unusual set of coordinates: three members from Venezuela, France, and New Zealand who all independently relocated to the UK and ended up forming a band in London. Singer Jess Allanic, bassist Alizon Taho, and drummer Ben Parker blend punk, nu metal, post hardcore, and electronica into a sound that switches freely between English and Spanish, drawing on influences as varied as System of a Down, Calle 13, and Muse. Their fourth album, Edge of the Abyss, arrived in 2025, and recent tracks like "Aimless" and "La Corriente" show the band staying restless and productive. What makes them especially hard to pin down is how much they control themselves. No label, no outside producers: they self produce their records, build their own gear, and Allanic directs and edits their music videos, teaching herself 3D software Blender during lockdown to push their visuals further. She also writes and illustrates the band's graphic novels, which tie into a fictional universe she has been developing since she was ten, the same universe that gave the band its name. BBC Radio 1 named them one of the Artists You Need to Know in 2024, which honestly feels overdue.
