About
Founded in Utrecht in 1974, Camerata Trajectina has spent decades doing something genuinely unusual: digging up Dutch vocal music from the Golden Age that nobody else has bothered to record. The ensemble zeroes in on domestic, middle class, and Dutch language church music, the kind that gets overlooked in favour of the grander Latin repertoire of the Spanish Netherlands. Director and musicologist Louis Peter Grijp has shaped a discography that reads like a cultural history tour, from Dutch East India Company sea shanties to Mennonite hymns to broadside ballads. Some of their most inventive work involves reconstruction. When the original texts to Jacob Obrecht's Dutch songs turned up lost, they brought in poet Gerrit Komrij to write new lyrics in period style. A second collaboration with Komrij set fresh Dutch texts to 16th century melodies inspired by the Seven Deadly Sins and Four Last Things as depicted by Hieronymus Bosch. Their 2004 double album of the Antwerp Songbook of 1544 picked up an Edison Klassiek award, a solid sign that this kind of specialist dedication can reach well beyond the academic world.
