About

Canto Ostinato is a minimalist composition by Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt that has grown into something of a classical phenomenon. Built on repeating, slowly shifting motifs, it pulls listeners into a trance like state that is hard to shake off. What makes it unusual among contemporary classical works is how much the performance itself is part of the piece: musicians are given considerable freedom to improvise, which means no two renditions are ever quite the same. Live performances are often staged with four grand pianos arranged in a cloverleaf pattern, the audience seated or lying around them, making the whole thing feel closer to a ritual than a conventional concert. Sessions typically run between ninety minutes and two hours. The work has also been performed in versions for organ and trumpet, showing how well its meditative, open ended structure translates across different instruments.
