About
Also known as: Caroline Widmann
Carolin Widmann is one of those violinists who seems equally at home premiering a brand new concerto and recording a Schubert fantasy, and that range is a big part of what makes her so compelling. She plays a 1782 Guadagnini and has worked closely with living composers including Pierre Boulez, Wolfgang Rihm, Rebecca Saunders and Erkki Sven Tüür, many of whom have written works specifically for her. She premiered her brother Jörg Widmann's Violin Concerto No. 2 at Suntory Hall in Tokyo, and her recordings span Morton Feldman, Mendelssohn, Schubert and solo Bach. Beyond performing, Widmann has been a professor at the University of Music and Theatre Leipzig since 2006, and she ran Germany's oldest chamber music festival, the Sommerliche Musiktage Hitzacker, for three years. She has played with the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, with conductors like Simon Rattle, Vladimir Jurowski and Esa Pekka Salonen. Her 2022 ECM solo album brings together Ysaÿe, George Benjamin, Hildegard von Bingen, Enescu and Bach, which about sums up her appetite for crossing centuries and styles.
