About

Carolyn Sampson is one of the most distinctive soprano voices in early music, with a tone critics have called rich yet pure. The Bedford born singer has built her career around historically informed performance, working closely with conductor Masaaki Suzuki on a marathon series of Bach cantata recordings for BIS. A real highlight came when she became the first performer to record all twelve stanzas of the newly discovered Bach aria BWV 1127 in 2005. Her stage work includes the title role in Lully's Psyché at the Boston Early Music Festival, a production later nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording. On the concert platform she has performed Bach's St Matthew Passion with The English Concert under Trevor Pinnock and appeared at the Leipzig Gewandhaus with Riccardo Chailly. Her recording A French Baroque Diva, celebrating the French soprano Marie Fel, took the Gramophone Award in the Recital category in 2015. She was appointed OBE in the 2024 New Year Honours for services to music.
