About
Cataplana is a six piece band that refuses to settle into a single genre. Soul, blues, folk, latin, pop, rock and chanson all feed into their sound, but the result never feels like a genre exercise. Each arrangement is distinctly their own, pitched somewhere between the familiar and the unexpected. The group mixes younger talent with more seasoned players, and that combination gives their live shows a particular kind of energy. The band takes its name from the Portuguese festive stew, a dish that changes depending on who is cooking and what is available, and the parallel is deliberate: no two performances are quite the same. With fifteen years of experience both at home and abroad, the lineup features piano, saxophone, drums, bass, accordion and vocals.
