About
Catherine Lamb works in a space most composers never bother with: the fine grained territory of just intonation, where tiny shifts in tuning become the whole point. Her music moves slowly and quietly by design. As she put it herself, the most intense sound is not the most intensive, and tones need room to blossom rather than being pushed into loudness. That philosophy runs through everything from her Prisma Interius series to Parallaxis Forma and divisio spiralis, works that treat harmonic color and shadow almost like physical material. She has picked up commissions from the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Musikfabrik, and the London Contemporary Orchestra, among plenty of others, and won the Ernst von Siemens Composer Prize in 2020. A lot of her recordings have come out on the British label Another Timbre, and her String Quartets release with the JACK Quartet landed on Kairos. She also wrote the film score for Anhe Ghore Da Daan, and has collaborated closely with Éliane Radigue, Marc Sabat, and Johnny Chang.
