About
Also known as: Celtic Women
Few Irish acts have pulled off what Celtic Woman managed: a one time concert at Dublin's Helix theatre in 2004 snowballed into a global phenomenon, largely because PBS kept airing the footage to American audiences who couldn't get enough. The all female ensemble blends traditional Celtic tunes, folk, and classical crossover into something that's been called "Riverdance for the voice," and the numbers back that up. Their debut album sat at number one on Billboard's World Music chart for 81 weeks, breaking Andrea Bocelli's long standing record in the process, and the group has since shifted over nine million records worldwide. The lineup has shifted across the years, with various vocalists cycling through alongside fiddler Máiréad Nesbitt, but the sound has stayed rooted in that mix of haunting Celtic melody and big orchestral sweep. Six Billboard World Album Artist of the Year titles and more than 20 albums later, they're still at it, with recent recordings leaning into well loved traditional fare like Wild Mountain Thyme and The Parting Glass.
