Charles Dutoit is a Swiss conductor whose name became synonymous with French and Russian twentieth century repertoire, largely through his long run as artistic director of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra starting in 1977. Under his baton, the OSM grew into Canada's most internationally recognised orchestra, and he and the ensemble cut a substantial catalogue of recordings for the Decca label. His tenure ended abruptly in 2002 after the Quebec Musicians Guild went public with complaints about verbal and psychological mistreatment of players. Outside Montreal, Dutoit's career has spanned an impressive range of major posts, including music director of the Orchestre National de France, principal conductor of Tokyo's NHK Symphony Orchestra, and a long stint as principal conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra from 2009. He has collected more than forty international prizes, among them two Grammy Awards, multiple Juno Awards, and the Royal Philharmonic Society Gold Medal. In 2018 he was named principal guest conductor of the St Petersburg Philharmonic.
