About
Charles Lloyd has been one of jazz's more restless spirits, someone who fused rock audiences with jazz sensibilities long before that felt normal. His tenor saxophone and flute work helped make the 1966 live recording Forest Flower a genuine crossover moment, pulling in fans from the hippie counterculture alongside traditional jazz listeners. He also spent a significant stretch of the 1970s playing with The Beach Boys, both in the studio and on the road, and contributed to their touring band's side project Celebration. Since 2007, Lloyd has anchored what's become known as his New Quartet, a tight unit built around pianist Jason Moran, acoustic bassist Reuben Rogers, and drummer Eric Harland. The lineup carries forward a tradition Lloyd has maintained for decades: assembling ensembles that feel collaborative rather than just backing bands, with enough personality in each player to keep things genuinely unpredictable.
