About
Also known as: Charly Blacks, Desmond Mendize
Charly Black put Jamaican dancehall on the map in places it had rarely reached before. His 2014 track "Gyal You a Party Animal", built on Kurt Riley's Jambe An riddim, quietly snowballed from a local hit into a phenomenon across South America, Mexico, Spain, and parts of the Caribbean and Central America. By the time Casablanca Records licensed it for the US in early 2016 and the music video landed on YouTube, the song was unstoppable. It has since racked up over 238 million YouTube views and more than 100 million streams on Spotify, making it one of the most watched dancehall videos ever. The track drew remix interest from Maluma, Daddy Yankee, and Jillionaire, though Maluma's version never officially dropped due to rights issues. Born Desmond Mendez in Rio Bueno, Jamaica, he spent years grinding through sound systems like Warlord International and Bass Odyssey before building a catalogue with labels including Coppershot, M Bass, and VP Records. His 2012 collaboration with J Capri, "Whine & Kotch", was already a dancehall favourite before "Party Animal" broke him internationally. He also scored a notable collab with Latin pop artist Jencarlos Canela on "Pa Que Me Invitan", and his debut studio album No Excuses arrived in 2023.
