Few disco era songs have the staying power of "Got to Be Real", and Cheryl Lynn is the voice behind it. Released in 1978, the track hit No. 1 on the R&B chart and helped her debut album sell over a million copies. She co wrote it with David Paich and David Foster, which set the tone for a career defined by sharp collaborations and serious vocal chops. Over the following decade she worked with producers like Ray Parker Jr., Luther Vandross, and the Minneapolis duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, whose track "Encore" gave her a second No. 1 on the R&B charts. She also lent her voice to Toto's "Georgy Porgy", earning the rock band their only R&B chart hit. "Got to Be Real" was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame in 2005, and artists from Mary J. Blige to Japanese pop star Kumi Koda have covered it since.
