About
Also known as: CSO, Orchestre symphonique de chicago, The Sinfonia Orchestra of Chicago, シカゴ交響楽団
One of the most storied orchestras in the world, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra has been a cornerstone of American classical music since Theodore Thomas founded it in 1891. Based at Symphony Center in Chicago's Loop, it sits firmly among the so called Big Five American orchestras, a group that represents the country's most prestigious ensembles. Over the decades the CSO has been shaped by a remarkable line of music directors, from Fritz Reiner and Georg Solti to Daniel Barenboim and Riccardo Muti, each leaving a distinct mark on the orchestra's sound and global reputation. Solti's 1971 European tour was a genuine turning point, sending the CSO through ten countries and earning rapturous praise from critics who hadn't heard anything quite like it. The welcome home included a ticker tape parade. The guest conductor list reads like a who's who of 20th century music, from Leonard Bernstein and Sergei Rachmaninoff to John Williams and Carlos Kleiber. Riccardo Muti led the orchestra from 2010 to 2023 and now holds the title of Music Director Emeritus for life, while Finnish conductor Klaus Mäkelä is set to take the reins as music director from the 2027 season.
