Chicha Libre takes the hazy, psychedelic grooves of Peruvian cumbia and runs them through a Brooklyn filter. Founded by Olivier Conan, the six piece band builds its sound around chicha, the fusion of rock and roll and cumbia that thrived in the Peruvian Andes and Amazon during the 1960s and 70s. Conan calls it "free form Chicha", which tells you they are not strict revivalists: they cover everyone from The Clash to Richard Wagner to Danny Elfman, all bent into that rubbery, reverb soaked cumbia feel. Their debut Sonido Amazonico landed on Conan's own Barbes Records in 2008 and scored a glowing 9 out of 10 in PopMatters. The follow up Canibalismo came in 2012, and the Cuatro Tigres EP arrived in 2013, earning an A minus from critic Robert Christgau. Guest appearances have included Jose Carballo, a former member of seminal Peruvian chicha act Los Hijos del Sol, which gives you a sense of how seriously the band takes the tradition it plays so loosely with.
