About

Christian Death helped write the blueprint for deathrock. Their 1982 debut, Only Theatre of Pain, grew out of the Los Angeles punk scene, slowed the tempo down, and loaded the songs with religious imagery. It became a cornerstone of American gothic music, and the band has kept up what one description calls a relentlessly confrontational stand against organized religion and conventional morality ever since. The story gets messy after that. Founding vocalist Rozz Williams was joined at first by Rikk Agnew, formerly of the Adolescents, but that lineup fell apart. Williams then teamed up with Valor Kand of Pompeii 99 for the more surreal, less punky Catastrophe Ballet in 1984, recorded in Wales and dedicated to André Breton, followed by Ashes in 1985. Williams left soon after, Kand took over as frontperson, and no original members remained. The split divided fans, and the argument hasn't gone away. The band has kept releasing material, with official videos like Sleepwalk and Forgiven landing in 2019.
