About
Christian Thielemann is one of the most prominent conductors working in the German operatic and symphonic tradition today, particularly known for his deep connection to Wagner and Bruckner. He served as chief conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden for over a decade and was music director of the Bayreuth Festival, where he made his debut in 2000 conducting Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. At Bayreuth he became only the second conductor in history, after Felix Mottl, to conduct all ten canonical Wagner operas performed there. He has twice conducted the Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concert, in 2019 and 2024, and his recordings for Sony, Deutsche Grammophon and Decca span Wagner, Bruckner, Beethoven, Strauss and more. Since September 2024 he has been Generalmusikdirektor of the Berlin State Opera, taking over from Daniel Barenboim.
